Lantfrid

Lantfrid , but also Lanfred (Latin Lantfridus or Lanfredus ), (*?; † 730 ) was an Alemannic duke from 709 to 730 . He was the son of Gotfrid and brother of Theudebald .

After Duke Gotfrid's death in 709, Lantfrid and his brother Theudebald took over the post of Alemannic Duke. It is possible that Lantfrid ruled mainly in the north, Theudebald in the south.

In their office both brothers were bitterly hostile to the Franconian house fights. Already in the course of the 7th century, the Alemannic domain had largely become independent in the face of weak Merovingian kings within the Frankish Empire, so that the dukes ruled as autonomously as kings. The Carolingians, who initially aspired as caretakers, tried to consolidate the Franconian Empire and thus came into conflict with the Alemanni dukes. In 722/723 Karl Martell led a campaign mainly against Theudebald, who was temporarily expelled from his territory. Lantfrid was able to hold the north of the duchy for the time being. In 724, under the protection of Karl Martell , monastery bishop Pirmin founded Reichenau monastery in the middle of the Alemannic duchy, which Lantfrid and Theudebald saw as a further provocation. Theudebald drove out Abbot Pirmin in 727 , ob odium Karoli (out of hatred against Karl Martell) and in 732 his successor Abbot Heddo from Reichenau Monastery.

According to the initial report of two manuscripts, the Alamann tribal law is said to have been revised as Lex Alamannorum at the time of Duke Lantfrid . However, this is likely to be a later forgery notice from the Reichenau Monastery (Lake Constance).

In 730 Karl Martell led a campaign against the dukes Theudebald and Lantfrid, who died that same year. Duke Theudebald then took over the sole office of duke in the Alamannia . In the following years the Alemanni were defeated and finally reintegrated into the Franconian Reich Association.
