Ursicinus (Gaukönig)
Ursicin (lat. Ursicinus ) was an Alemannic Gau king in the 4th century.
According to the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus , the Caesar (lower emperor) Julian defeated a coalition of Alemannic military leaders, namely Ursicinus, Makrian , Hariobaud , Ur , Vadomar and Vestralp, in the Battle of Argentoratum in 357 . Apparently there was no general Alemannic kingship, so that larger groups only joined forces on joint campaigns. Parts of the research assume that Ursicinus and some other Alemannic military leaders only sent troops to the battle, but did not take part personally (see Fischer, p. 562).
In 359 Julian crossed the Rhine near Mainz with his troops . After the Romans had devastated the territory of the Alamanni, they agreed to the return of all prisoners; then a peace treaty was signed. There are no other reports about Ursicinus.
