from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suomar (lat. Suomarius ) was a Alamannic Gau - King in the 4th century.

The Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus reports: After a victorious battle against the Roman army master Barbatio in 357 near Rauracum ( Kaiseraugst ), the Alemannic kings Suomar, Hortar , Ur , Ursicinus and Vestralp gathered their armies under the leadership of Chnodomar and Agenarich and went to the battle of Argentine . After the battle was lost, Suomar asked the Roman commander Severus for his life and land, which he was granted on condition that soldiers and food were delivered.

In 358 the Caesar (lower emperor) Julian (who became Roman emperor in 361) concluded a peace treaty with Suomar. However , the contract was not renewed by Julian's successor as Roman emperor, Valentinian I , in 364.
