- Autumn: The Italian campaign of the Alemanni dukes Butilin and Leuthari I against the Eastern Roman general Narses fails before Capua : Butilin falls in the Battle of Casilinus , Leuthari has to retreat defeated.
- Restauratio imperii : With the so-called Pragmatic Sanction , Emperor Justinian I decreedthe incorporation of the conquered (and devastated) Italy into the Eastern Roman Empire under the administration of a Praetorian prefect with the simultaneous dissolution of the traditional Western Roman offices.
