Raphael Pumpelly
Raphael Pumpelly (born September 8, 1837 in Owego , New York , † August 10, 1923 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an American geologist and explorer .
At the invitation of the respective governments, he measured parts of Japan and China . He carried out the first detailed survey of the Gobi desert and explored Mongolia and Siberia . He was later a professor of mining at Harvard University . His research was influenced by Louis Agassiz . Pumpelly spent the summers near Mount Monadnock , and in 1884 he marked a path from his home to the summit that still bears his name today. In 1870 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1872 to the National Academy of Sciences . In 1905 he was president of the Geological Society of America .
The mineral pumpellyite , a subspecies of chlorastrolite found only in Keweenaw County , Michigan , was named after him.
