Turbinicarpus beguinii is a species of plant in the genus Turbinicarpus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Turbinicarpus beguinii grows individually with grayish to bluish green, spherical to short cylindrical-spherical bodies and has fiber roots. The bodies reach heights of 7 to 15 centimeters and diameters of 3 to 10 centimeters. Their conical cusps are 2 to 3 millimeters high. The 2 to 3 slender, straight, protruding central spines are white to yellowish brown and darker at their tips. They are 12 to 15 millimeters long. The 9 to 27 radiating, straight, white radial spines are also darker at their tips and between 4 and 6 millimeters long.

The whitish or yellowish to magenta colored flowers have a diameter of 1.2 to 1.8 centimeters. The greenish magenta colored fruits are 16 to 18 millimeters long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Turbinicarpus beguinii is common in the Mexican states of Nuevo León , Coahuila , Zacatecas , San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas . The first description as Thelocactus beguinii was in 1983 by Nigel Paul Taylor . In 1997 it was placed in the genus Turbinicarpus by Alessandro Mosco and Carlo Zanovello . Synonyms are Turbinicarpus mandragora subsp. beguinii (NPTaylor) Lüthy and Rapicactus beguinii (NPTaylor) Lüthy .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Turbinicarpus beguinii subsp. beguinii
  • Turbinicarpus beguinii subsp. hintoniorum

Turbinicarpus beguinii is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. classified as not endangered in nature.
