Rapoon
Rapoon from Newcastle upon Tyne , England , is the musical solo project of Robin Storey , a former member of Zoviet France . His music can be classified as post-industrial and ambient .
Band history
In 1992 Storey left Zoviet France in order to break new ground as a solo artist with the project name Rapoon. The name of the project comes from Storey's little nephew, who pronounced his first name Robin as Ra-Poon . After leaving Zoviet France, Robin Storey released his debut album Dream Circle in the same year , which had already been made in previous years.
Robin Storey composes his music alone. Sometimes he is supported by female singers like the Moroccan Kuadija Mohammed or the opera singer Vicki Bain. Musically, he also worked with Hans-Joachim Roedelius von Cluster , Damo Suzuki , Randy Greif and Tatyana Stepchenko. With Nigel Ayers from Nocturnal Emissions he runs the project Hank And Slim , with his former Zoviet France colleagues the band Reformed Faction , which was originally called The Reformed Faction of Soviet France. To date, Rapoon has released over 40 long players. The respective sound carriers usually appear in quantities of 500 to 1500 pieces. As a painter and graphic artist, Robin Storey takes care of the design of the covers, some of which are very elaborate, often with ethnic motifs.
style
According to Storey, working at Zoviet France had no longer satisfied him spiritually. Storey was also fascinated by the rhythmic minimalism of the music from West Africa , Bangladesh and India . With his work at Rapoon he implements his interest in the music of indigenous peoples, whereby his main focus is on the effect of the music on the listener.
"I personally use the musical construction techniques of loops and rhythmic repetition as a kind of platform for inducing a sort of trance like reception."
In addition to music from the Indian subcontinent and Africa , Storey also dealt with sounds from the Middle East and Russia , which he has processed in analog and digital form. Many rhythms and melodies of indigenous peoples flowed into his spherical electronic music full of multi-layered soundscapes. Samples of tablas , didgeridoos , drums made of wood and metal, kalimbas , pipes , flutes or a sitar are also used. The instruments are then further processed and alienated with a lot of reverb and echo. Especially the early works of Rapoon create a hypnotic effect with these rhythms, the numerous samples and the copious use of loops . The later releases are mostly technoid, with influences from trance and acid .
