Rashid Alimov

Rashid Alimov (also Rashid Alimov , Russian Рашид Алимов , * 23. June 1953 in Stalinabad , Tajik SSR , today Dushanbe , Tajikistan ) is a Tajik politician and diplomat , among other things, as Foreign Minister of Tajikistan and the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was active .

Career

Alimov was born in what is now Dushanbe in the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic. He studied political science at the Tajik National University and graduated in 1975. The following year Alimov joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and was then active in the communist youth. After changing activities for the Communist Party of Tajikistan , Alimov became deputy general secretary of the party in 1990, and in this function he experienced Tajikistan's independence in 1991 in the course of the collapse of the Soviet Union .

After independence, he became an advisor to Rahmon Nabiev , the first president of the independent country. In 1992 he became the new Foreign Minister of Tajikistan and held this post until 1995. He was then appointed Ambassador of Tajikistan to the United Nations and remained in this position until 2005. He then became the Ambassador of the Republic of Tajikistan to the People's Republic of China .

On July 10, 2015, Alimov was named Secretary General of the organization at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Ufa, Russia . His three-year term began on January 1, 2016 and ended on December 31, 2018. One of the most significant events of his term was the admission of India and Pakistan as full members of the organization at the SCO summit in June 2017 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan . Alimov called this expansion of the organization a truly historic event . With the accession of the two South Asian states, the organization is in a position to influence not only the situation in the region, but also the situation in the whole world . On December 28, 2018, Alimov met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on one of his last appointments as Secretary General of the SCO . He praised Alimow's contribution to the further development of the SCO, while Alimov expressed his thanks to the Chinese side for their support during his tenure.

Alimov is married and has two children. He is the author of several books and numerous articles, including two books on the development of the SCO and the further perspectives of the organizations. In addition, Alimov has received several orders and awards, including the Tajik Order of Friendship and the Gold Medal for special contributions to humanitarian cooperation between the SCO states.
