Town hall Koethen
The town hall of Köthen is a monument in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt .
Location and shape
The town hall of Köthen is located northeast of the St. Jakob church on the north side of the market on the corner of Springstrasse. Due to the successful corner development, its two main wings extend along Marktstrasse and Ritterstrasse, whereas only a gable front shows towards Springstrasse. However, this west side has been particularly emphasized by the main tower on the southeast corner and a tower marker on the northwest corner of the building. The building has numerous details, ranging from bay windows to balconies, tail gables to the main tower, reliefs to arcade-shaped basement windows. There are also dormers, gargoyles, portals, columns, clocks, cross arms or even tower roof turrets.
On the northwest corner an angel bears the city coat of arms and above it is the motto:
free, art and construction would never rust.
history
Köthen developed into a city at the beginning of the 14th century and benefited from its central location between Magdeburg , Halle (Saale) and Leipzig , whose trade routes met here. The old town hall from 1437 remained untouched for centuries; a portal was only added in 1708. After that there was probably a gradual renovation of the building. Nothing of these buildings has survived, however, because they were torn down for the new building that was built between 1889 and 1900. The Berlin architectural office of Heinrich Reinhardt & Georg Süßenguth , who also built the town halls in Dessau , Berlin-Charlottenburg and Wuppertal-Elberfeld , was responsible for this new building in the style of the German Renaissance .
use
The town hall is under monument protection and is recorded in the monument register with the number 094 17537. In addition to the city administration, the building also housed the council cellar, as is often the case, of which remains from 1457 have been preserved. The previous building also housed the city court and police office.
