The Steglitz town hall is located in the Steglitz district of Berlin on the corner of Schloßstraße and Grunewaldstraße and was built in 1898 as the town hall of the rural community of Steglitz. For the former Steglitz district , which existed from 1920 to 2000, it was the seat of the central administration. The house was then rebuilt for administrative tasks in the then newly created Steglitz-Zehlendorf district . Parts of the district administration and a citizens' office are located there today .
construction
The town hall was built in 1897/1898 by the architects Reinhardt and Süßenguth in the neo-Gothic style. The architectural competition had Emil Seydel won. The foundation stone was laid on September 13, 1896; It was inaugurated on March 22, 1898, the birthday of Emperor Wilhelm I , who died in 1888 . In the style of brick Gothic , the facade consists of red bricks . In 1901 Karl Fischer founded the youth movement Wandervogel in the Ratskeller . At the corner of Grunewaldstrasse there is a memorial plaque that also shows the migratory bird of prey.
Integration into the shopping center
The historic building was integrated into the Das Schloss shopping center , which was built in 2005 , for which extensions were demolished on both sides. The inner courtyard has been covered since then and is used as a restaurant area. The subway entrance below the town hall has been expanded to provide direct access to the shopping center.
The city library of the Steglitz district was integrated into the new shopping center and expanded to become the district central library on over 5000 m². The castle investor took over the costs . In return, the investor received a discount on the property of the former city library, which covered the investment costs 1: 1.

In diagonally opposite skyscraper Steglitzer gyro is a bus terminal of the BVG and below the subway station Hall Steglitz , end point of the subway line U9 . In the immediate vicinity there are several stops for numerous bus lines and the S-Bahn station on the S1 line. In the immediate vicinity, the federal motorway 103 runs parallel to the Wannseebahn route .
