Worth seeing

Das Schloss shopping center , seen from Grunewaldstraße from the southwest (2012)

The first house numbers up to number 3 belong to the Das Schloss shopping center . The "old" town hall Steglitz from 1898 was included and its inner courtyard was integrated into the new building. An extension from the 1920s and other outbuildings were demolished in 2002. The Steglitz City Library (Ingeborg-Drewitz Library) was also closed and demolished for construction. The low building (house number 3) was built in the mid-1950s on what was then a ruined site. The city library has been located in the shopping center since 2006.

In house number 13 - with a memorial plaque - Franz Kafka lived with Dora Diamant from 1923 to February 1924 .

The private Kant primary school is located in house number 44. A Kant kindergarten has been set up opposite in house number 17.

Schwartzsche Villa 2009

The highest house number in Grunewaldstrasse is 55, Schwartzsche Villa . Since 1995 the house has been part of today's Steglitz-Zehlendorf Cultural Office with a gallery and café. The building was designed by the architect Christian Heidecke for the banker Carl Schwartz and inaugurated on February 16, 1898 for the christening of the first grandson. After 1945 the villa was uninhabited and was used at times as an orphanage and warehouse. The forecourt was used for several summers by a sports fashion house on Hermann-Ehlers-Platz as an exhibition area for camping items. In 1961, the state of Berlin acquired the property from the community of heirs and planned an extension for the town hall and a swimming pool on it. The garden belonging to the villa extends to Rothenburgstraße and is now a public green area with a children's playground and football field. Nothing has been preserved from the fountain and other garden details from pre-war times.

Former VW pavilion from 1951

On the corner of Schloßstraße there is a round, glass sales pavilion, which was built in 1951 by the Eduard Winter company - a leading VW dealer in Berlin until the 1990s - and has been on the list of monuments since 1988 . It now serves as a bakery.

Transport links

The tram of the community of Steglitz - also called Grunewaldbahn (GWB) - drove through Grunewaldstrasse from November 1905 and was tram line  40 from 1946. In October 1959, the tram was replaced by the  A68 bus . The bus route X83 currently runs through Grunewaldstrasse.

The Grunewaldstrasse in literature

Richard Kraft, the protagonist of Jonas Lüscher's novel Kraft , lived on Grunewaldstrasse in the 1980s.
