Raymond Boni (* 15. March 1947 in Toulon ) is a French jazz - guitarist and composer .

biography

Boni began as a rock 'n' roll amateur musician playing as a pianist in the style of Bill Haley ; under the influence of the music of Charles Mingus he finally came into contact with jazz. At the age of 15 he switched to the guitar and occupied himself with Django Reinhardt's gypsy swing and flamenco , which had a decisive influence on the development of his style.

At the age of 19 he went to London to work as a musician; he performed at soirées and in clubs. Eventually he returned to France and studied piano at the Conservatory and took courses in Solfège .

In 1969 he founded the Association Vivante with percussionist Bertrand Gauthier . In 1973 he worked in the orchestra of Gérard Marais (he also played in his big band de guitares ). In 1976 he worked with the saxophonists Hervé Bourde and Claude Bernard, and was a member of the trio of André Jaume and Gérard Siracusa ; 1978 began his long-term collaboration with Joe McPhee . In the early 1980s he was a member of his ensemble Po Music and worked on its productions for hat Art , such as Oleo & a Future Retrospective (1982) or Linear B (1990).

In 1981 Boni moved to Marseille , where from then on he no longer performed as often and concentrated more on composing. He worked with the dancer and choreographer Geneviève Sorin and wrote music for her ensemble. Boni continued his collaboration with Jaume and Siracusa there. In 1984/85 he worked with Joe McPhee in New York City . In 1991, in the trio with McPhee and André Jaume, an homage to Jimmy Giuffre was created . He also worked in the Les Mistrals formation with British improvisation musicians Terry Day and Max Eastley , and in the 1990s with Claude Tchamitchian and Éric Echampard. Boni also worked on projects outside of jazz, for example with his son Bastien Boni.

Boni works in a duo with the double bass player Claude Tchamitchian and in a quartet with Joe McPhee and Daunik Lazro . 1999 took Boni in a duo with the drummer Éric Échampard a homage to Cecil Taylor ; 2001 came another collaboration between Boni and Joe McPhee for the album Voices & Dreams and some concerts in the USA and Europe.
