Raymond Wolansky

Raymond Wolansky (born February 15, 1926 in Cleveland , Ohio , † December 1, 1998 in Leonberg ) was an American opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Wolansky was born in the United States in 1926 as the son of Ukrainian immigrants. He was trained as a singer in Cleveland and Boston . From 1948 to 1950 he sang with the New England Opera Company. In order to gain experience as an ensemble, he then went - like many young American singers back then - to Europe.

He had his first engagement there in 1954 in Lucerne . Two years later he moved to Graz . He specialized in the Italian repertoire. After Wolansky made a guest appearance in Stuttgart in 1958 , he got a permanent engagement there from the 1958/59 season. He played and sang many roles at the State Theater in Stuttgart . In addition, he was engaged as a guest singer at many major opera houses in Europe and later also overseas, especially in Chicago and San Francisco as well as at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. He was preferred to be cast in bel canto roles. He has appeared at the Glyndebourne , Edinburgh and Schwetzingen festivals . I.a. he performed with Joan Sutherland , Beverly Sills , Leontyne Price , Inge Borkh , Shirley Verrett , Alfredo Kraus , Nicolai Gedda , Sándor Kónya , Luciano Pavarotti , Plácido Domingo , Nicolai Ghiaurov and Martti Talvela .

Wolansky lived in Leonberg-Warmbronn from 1970 until his death .
