Re: Zero - Starting Life in Another World ( Japanese Re: ゼ ロ か ら 始 め る 異 世界 生活 , Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu , German: “Re: Life in another world from zero”), with the alternative English sub-title Re: Life in a different world from Zero , is a Japanese novel series by Tappei Nagatsuki. The web novel was adapted as a light novel series with illustrations by Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka, as well as three manga implementations . An anime version by the Japanese animation studio White Fox started on April 4, 2016.

The story is about Natsuki Subaru, a NEET who suddenly finds himself in a parallel world in the evening after buying some groceries. After initial confusion, he is saved from a group of thugs by a silver-haired half-elf who introduces herself to him as Satella. He stays close to her as he wants to help her find her locket, which was stolen from her recently and is very valuable to her. After a while they find the thief's hiding place in the city's slums . Subaru enters the thief's house, but finds only a man's body covered in blood. Thereupon he is fatally injured by an unknown woman. Satella, who has been waiting outside so far, is suspicious of the noises and also enters the house, whereupon she too is killed by the woman. With his last breaths, Subaru promises to save Satella. The next moment, Subaru finds himself in broad daylight in front of the same greengrocer he asked some things about after his arrival in the world. Subaru is confused, but assumes his death was a daydream and therefore only his imagination. He goes in search of Satella and her locket. So he goes back to the slum and finds the landlord, Rome, whom he saw dead before, alive again. In conversation with him, Subaru finds out that the thief, Felt, has to arrive soon and he can buy the locket from her. However, another party is also interested in the badge, which is represented by a woman and introduces itself as Elsa. Elsa offers a large sum for the medallion, but Subaru wins the negotiation by offering his cell phone, technology that doesn't exist in this world. Elsa collapses, but asks him what he plans to do with the medallion, whereupon he replies that he would like to find the owner (i.e. Satella) and give it back to her. Then the mood turns: Elsa attacks Subaru and a fight breaks out. In the course of this, Rome, Felt and Subaru die, as Elsa proves to be extremely strong. The next moment Subaru finds himself in front of the greengrocer again and passes out. When he wakes up he sees Satella walking in the street and calls for her. "Satella" turns around, but is angry that he calls her the name of the evil envy witch and apparently doesn't know Subaru.
Subaru later finds out that he has the ability to undo his death and thus rewind time. However, the problem is that he cannot determine the point in time at which he wakes up, but that it is determined at random. Furthermore, no one remembers what happened before his death except himself. Nor can he tell anyone about his ability, because when he tries, time seems to stand still and threatening arms of miasma appear, giving the impression that if he continues to speak, they want to kill him.
publication
Tappei Nagatsuki first published Re: Zero on April 20, 2012 on the web novel site Shōsetsuka ni narō ( 小説家 に な ろ う , "Become a novelist"). The publisher Media Factory came then to Nagatsuki and offered this to publish the work professionally. However, new chapters will continue to be published first on Shosetsuka ni narō . The first volume of this illustrated by Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka light novel series was published on January 25, 2014. So far (as of July 2020) 23 volumes have been published, as well as four volumes of a spin-off series (EX) and six volumes with side stories (Tanpenshuu).
The light novel series was licensed for the American market by Yen Press in December 2015 and has been published since July 19, 2016.
Adaptations
Manga
The work has been adapted in three manga series: Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: Daiisshō: Ōto no Ichinichi-hen ( Re: ゼ ロ か ら 始 め め る 異 世界 生活 第一 章 王 都 の 一日 編 , dt. "~: Chapter 1: The first day in the royal capital ”) drawn by Daichi Matsue was published in Media Factory's Comic Alive magazine between June 27, 2014 (issue 8/2014) and February 27, 2015 (issue 4/2015). The individual chapters were also summarized in two anthologies ( Tankōbon ).
Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: Dainishō: Yashiki no Ishūkan-hen ( 第二章屋敷の一週間編 , dt "~: Chapter 2: The first week in the residence.") By Makoto Fugetsu appear at Square Enix in its Big Gangan magazine since November 25, 2014 (issue 12/2014). So far, two anthologies have also been published.
The most recent work, Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Daisanshō: Truth of Zero is also drawn by Daichi Matsue for Comic Alive and has been published since May 27, 2015 (issue 7/2015). Two edited volumes have also been published so far.
Yen Press licensed the first manga series for the US, where it will appear from July 26, 2016. In Germany it has been published by Tokyopop under the title Re: Zero - Capital City since October 2016.
Anime
Studio White Fox adapted the work as an anime series. Masaharu Watanabe is directing and written by Masahiro Yotokani, while Kyūta Sakai is responsible for character design and animation management.
The 25-episode first season of the series ran from April 4 to September 19, 2016 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on TV Tokyo and began with a 48-minute double episode. The series was streamed as a simulcast on the streaming provider Crunchyroll worldwide outside of Asia.
The opening titles are Redo by Konomi Suzuki and Paradisus-Paradoxum by MYTH & ROID. The most common end credits are Styx Helix by MYTH & ROID and Stay Alive by Rie Takahashi. Occasionally the titles run while the anime is still playing or other titles were used in individual episodes, such as STRAIGHT BET or theater D by MYTH & ROID. In some cases opening and / or closing titles have been completely omitted.
An OVA bonus sequence was announced in September 2017. The OVA episode, entitled Re: Zero - Memory Snow , was shown in Japanese theaters on October 6, 2018. A second OVA episode, entitled Re: Zero - Frozen Bonds , was shown in Japan on November 8, 2019.
A second season was announced in March 2019 and should air in Japan from April 2020. However, the start of the second season has been postponed to July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
The series has been released on the VoD platform Anime on Demand with German synchronization since November 29, 2019 . Since December 5, 2019, the series has also been released on DVD and Blu-ray in Germany.
