Reformed Church Grüningen
The Reformed Church in Grüningen is an early classicist cross church in the Zurich countryside .
History and building history
The Schloss Grüningen possessed since 1396 with its own chapel. Grüningen did not have its own parish church until 1610, although the village had town charter. After Gossau , the townspeople were ecclesiastical until Grüningen was raised to a parish in 1610 and the renovated castle chapel was used as a parish church. In 1649 the church was enlarged.
In 1739, due to the marked increase in population, a new building was considered, which the city of Zurich authorities refrained from for financial reasons. In 1777 another new building project was launched. The building commission opted for a spacious building based on the cross-space scheme that had already been implemented several times in the Zurich region . The construction was realized from 1782 to 1783. Parts of the medieval castle had to give way to him.
On October 20, 1970, the church burned to the ground. The external appearance of the church was reconstructed between 1975 and 1977, while the interior was made smaller and an additional parish hall was moved under the church.
Building description
Exterior
The building rises on the north side of the palace complex and has a rectangular floor plan with a sloping side. The simple facades are characterized by high rectangular windows. The main facade facing the city is divided into three axes by rectangular windows and is crowned by a triangular gable with oculus . A flight of stairs leads to the portal , which is decorated with a classical garland - the only distinctive ornament in the exterior. A roof turret with a sweeping hood towers over the flat hipped roof of the nave .
inner space
Even after the extensive renovation from 1971 to 1977, the interior is still oriented transversely. Instead of a pulpit , a simple ambo was placed on the long side . The center of the church is a square lowered by one step with a central table, which is intended for the celebration of the Lord's Supper and baptism . In 1918 the church received a pneumatic organ from Carl Theodor Kuhn , which was replaced in 1977 by a two-manual mechanical instrument from the same company. Gian Casty created the stained glass for the church windows.
Bells
Five church bells from the Rüetschi bell foundry in Aarau ring in the tall, slightly sloping church tower. After the old three-part historical bell fell victim to a fire, it was replaced by this one. In 1976 the bells were inaugurated and pulled up into the tower. The total weight of all five bells is around 6510 kg.
