The rainbow minnow becomes about five to eight centimeters long. It generally has a translucent pink to gold color and a silver-black stripe on its sides. Their belly is golden to bluish and their fins are reddish. In addition, large parts of their skin often have a bluish tinge. The adult male rainbow minnow changes appearance during the breeding season and then temporarily has blue ventral fins , a purple head and a red nose.

The natural range are the southern states of the USA, especially Alabama and Georgia . Originally the rainbow minnow was endemic to the Mobile River system . There it occurs mainly in the catchment areas of the Alabama River and the Coosa River . But now there are populations in some rivers that belong to the catchment area of ​​the Tennessee River . The rainbow minnow is kept as an ornamental fish in both aquariums and ponds.

The spawning season of the rainbow minnow is between May and June.
