The administrative district of Mainz was an administrative district in the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1848 to 1852 . The district seat was Mainz .

history

As a result of the March Revolution , the provinces and counties in the Grand Duchy were abolished in 1848 and replaced by administrative districts. The Mainz administrative district was also created as one of ten (from 1850: eleven) administrative districts in the Grand Duchy. For this purpose, the entire former province of Rheinhessen was redeclared to the new administrative district of Mainz . The area turned out to be too extensive: In 1850 the administrative district of Worms was spun off, the area of the former districts of Alzey and Worms .

As a product of the March Revolution, this territorial reform was reversed after the victory of the restorative forces in the reaction era in 1852, and three districts were formed from the territory of the Mainz government district: Bingen , Mainz and Oppenheim .
