Sir Reginald Oswald Palmer , GCMG , MBE (born February 15, 1923 in Toronto , Ontario , † May 23, 2016 in Mount Parnassus , Grenada ) was a politician from Grenada who served as governor-general from August 6, 1992 to August 8, 1996 Grenada was.

Life

Palmer completed his education at the Beaulieu Roman Catholic School and St. George's Roman Catholic Boy's School and then worked for a short time as a school teacher. He then began in 1943 a teacher training course at the Government Teachers' Training College in Trinidad and Tobago , which he completed in 1945 with the Trained Teachers Certificate . He then worked between 1945 and 1956 as an assistant teacher at St. George's Roman Catholic Boy's School . He was also a founding member of the Catholic Teacher's Association , the Caribbean Association of Catholic Teachers, and the Grenada Teachers' Social Security and Welfare Association , of which he was secretary between 1951 and 1969 was. Palmer acquired the London Matriculation Certificate during this time , after which he became head of this St. George's Roman Catholic Boy's School in 1956 . In 1963 he began a pedagogical course for school principals and principals at the University of Birmingham , which he also completed in 1965 with a certificate. In 1968 he finally became a tutor himself at Grenada Teacher's College and began studying pedagogy at the University of Calgary in 1970 , completing it in 1971 with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.).

After his return to Grenada, Palmer was first deputy head of the school board in 1972 and then rector of the Grenada Teacher's College in 1973 , before he took over the post of head of the school board in 1974 as chief education officer . He held this post until he left the civil service in 1980 and was then President of the Grenada Employers Federation until 1982 . He was also involved in many other organizations such as the Board of Directors of Grenada Boy's Secondary School , the Public Service Commission , the Education Advisory Council , the Civic Awareness Organization , the Labor Advisory Board , the Drug Avoidance Committee, and the local University of the West Indies Faculty of Continuing Education Advisory Board (UWI). He was also a member of the Grenada Union of Teachers and served as its vice-secretary, vice-president and most recently as president. At the same time he was a representative of the teachers' union in the school board. For his many years of service he became a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1973 .

On August 6, 1992, Palmer succeeded Paul Scoon as Governor General of Grenada and held this office until August 8, 1996. In 1992, he was made the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG), so that henceforth he carried the suffix "Sir".

Palmer was married to Judith Palmer, who was a Senate member for a term in the late 1980s . After his death on May 23, 2016, he was buried with a state funeral after a mass in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Saint George .
