Groningen-Assen region

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Regio Groningen-Assen is a cooperation zone (comparable to the Regiopole region ) in the northern Netherlands with the cities of Groningen (231,000 inhabitants after the incorporation of Haren and Ten Boer) and Assen (67,000 inhabitants) and the surrounding area. In 2018 the Groningen-Assen region had 505,000 inhabitants.

The airport in the region is Groningen Airport Eelde .

The region was founded in 1996 after the national government asked the city of Groningen to cooperate more closely with the surrounding area on housing policy. Groningen and ten other municipalities then developed a strategic document "Regiovisie 2030", which was renewed in 2005. The cooperation between the partner communities is voluntary. An agreement with a term until 2030 was concluded in 2004. The main objectives of local cooperation are: 1. Support for an economic core area in the north of the Netherlands, 2. Strengthening regional cohesion and local transport, and 3. Developing the quality of life in town and country. The strategic agreements are implemented by the participating municipalities, while a steering group monitors compliance with the overarching goals. Other groups take care of quality management and cooperation with local civil society. The work is financed by contributions from the partners, the central government and the European Union . The total budget is to be 1.5 billion euros by 2020.

Due to changes in the municipal division, the number of participating municipalities in the Groningen-Assen region has been only seven since January 1, 2019 instead of eleven: Groningen , Assen , Het Hogeland , Westerkwartier , Noordenveld , Tynaarlo and Midden-Groningen , plus the provinces Groningen and Drenthe .
