Rechaw'am Ze'ewi (1956)

Rechaw'am Ze'ewi ( Hebrew רחבעם זאבי, alternative spelling Rehavam Zeevi ; *  June 20, 1926 in Jerusalem ; †  October 17, 2001 ibid), nickname "Gandhi", was an Israeli general , politician and historian who supported the right-wing nationalist Moledet Party founded.

Life

Ze'ewi's well-known nickname "Gandhi" came from the time of his military service - as a very slim person wearing glasses who shaved the hair of his head, his appearance had reminded his comrades of Mahatma Gandhi . His highest rank in the IDF was that of major general ( Aluf ).

In 1974 he became anti-terrorism adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin . In 1975 he became a consultant for the secret services. Ze'ewi resigned from this position in 1977 when Menachem Begin became Prime Minister in 1977 . In 1981 Ze'ewi was appointed director of the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel-Aviv .

In 1988 Ze'ewi founded the Moledet party ("Homeland"). The main goal of this movement was to relocate the Palestinians from Israel, Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He wanted to achieve this, among other things, by making life for the Palestinians so unbearable that they left on their own. His party left Yitzchak Shamir's Likud government, disappointed with the 1991 Middle East Conference in Madrid .

For the next ten years his party remained in opposition. He rejected the government of Yitzchak Rabin and Shimon Peres as well as that of Ehud Barak . After Ariel Sharon was elected Prime Minister in 2001, he became Minister of Tourism as a member of the National Union party . In interviews he spoke out in favor of Jordan being part of Israel, as ratified in the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine .

In an attack in the corridor of the Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem on October 18, 2001, during the Al-Aqsa Intifada, he was killed by two shots in the head and one in the neck. Less than an hour later, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine committed itself to the act. He was the first Israeli minister in office to be assassinated in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict .

On January 15, 2002, Ahmad Sa'adat , head of the radical Palestinian organization PFLP, was arrested by police from the Palestinian Authority. Israel blames him for the attack. On December 25, 2008, Sa'adat was sentenced by an Israeli military tribunal to 30 years in prison, among other things for leading the fatal attack on Israeli tourism minister Rechaw'am Ze'ewi.
