Life

Põder graduated from high school in Varstu in 1961 and then studied at the University of Tartu , which he left in 1969 as a qualified oceanographer , interrupted by three years of military service . As a student and later he took part in sea voyages several times. After two years in the Estonian Nature Conservation Society, Põder worked as a literary assistant for the newspaper “Noorte Hääl” from 1971 and as an editor for the publishing house “Eesti Raamat” from 1977.

Põder made his debut in the Tartu University newspaper in the late 1960s and then published in various magazines and edited volumes. He made his book debut with the youth book The Gift (1981), which he had a few more to follow ( Goldenrute , German Das Sonnenglas , The longest summer and The burning wheel , 1982-1986).

His first volume of short stories appeared in 1982, followed quickly by other novels. In his early prose, Põder dealt with family life, with a realistic tone and autobiographical elements predominating. Later philosophical issues came to the fore, and the critics noted a "melancholy atmosphere" in which the "motive of loneliness and the role of chance dominate in a person's life."

Põder often turned to the recent history of Estonia in his novels and has recently received critical acclaim. One of his fellow writers was "convinced that Rein Põder's work deserves much more thorough attention than before."
