Reiner von Velen (* before 1480 ; † June 20, 1526 in Münster ) was a canon in Münster.

Life

Reiner von Velen came from the Westphalian noble family von Velen . The descendants of his brother Hermann († 1521) made it into many important offices and for a long time put the official resignation in Meppen and Rheine.

After studying in Bologna and then in Siena , Reiner von Velen became canon in the old cathedral in Münster in 1500 . Eight years later he was a canon in Xanten and renounced here in 1513. On April 3, 1518 he received the archdeaconate of Velen. The election to the cathedral provost fell on January 7, 1520 and was confirmed by the bishop on January 16. Reiner took his oath of office three days later and vowed to comply with the agreement on property management made by his predecessor Rudolf von Langen with the cathedral chapter. On February 7, 1520, Velen signed a contract that regulated the administration of property between the provost and the cathedral chapter in detail. This agreement was confirmed by the bishop on February 11, 1521 and on January 7, 1527 by the Pope . A long argument developed over the provost's appointment of the coadjutor . The chapter saw this as a restriction of his right to vote and wrote to the cathedral chapter on March 6, 1525 because of himself and the attacks by Rotger Schmising. The Rota issued a judgment on March 25, 1525 because of inaccuracies in the administration of the office .

Reiner von Velen is buried in Münster Cathedral. His epitaph is in the cloister of the cathedral and names July 12, 1526 as the day of his death.
