Reinhard Rother (born October 13, 1964 ) was a soccer player in the top GDR soccer league. In the major league he played for 1. FC Magdeburg , Sachsenring Zwickau and Energie Cottbus . He is an eight-time GDR junior national player.

Athletic career

At the age of 13, Rother joined the youth division of 1. FC Magdeburg in 1978. As a junior player, he played eight international matches with the GDR junior national team. After he was allowed to play in the men's division in 1983, the club used him in the 2nd team, which played in the third-class district league Magdeburg . There he drew attention to himself as a striker with good performances, so that coach Claus Kreul used him in six league games in the GDR league at the end of the second half of the 1983/84 season. There Rother played his first game on March 31, 1984 in the encounter between Wismut Aue and 1. FCM (0-0), when he was substituted on for midfielder Wolfgang Steinbach in the 88th minute . In his second league appearance on April 7, 1984, he played the full season and scored two goals in a 3-2 home win against Hansa Rostock. Due to this positive development, Rother was accepted into the league squad as a regular striker for the 1984/85 season, while still a student. This year he played more than half of the 26 point games with 14 appearances. Although he played the full 90 minutes in five matches, he could not get beyond the role of substitute and was not very successful with just one goal. In the summer of 1985 he was supposed to make way for the newcomers Markus Wuckel and Ralf Kleiminger and was relegated to the 2nd team. However, since the regular strikers Windelband and Cebulla were not available for a long time, Rother unexpectedly became a regular player with 25 point games, ten of them over a full 90 minutes and mostly in the starting eleven. In 1986/87 Rother was ousted by Dirk Losert's access to Dresden and only made ten stakes in the game. On October 1, 1986 he came to his only European Cup appearance. In the match between 1. FCM and Athletico Bilbao (1-0), he came on as a right striker in the 60th minute. After Rother had also played ten league games in the 1987/88 season, he left 1. FC Magdeburg at the end of the season with a record of 65 league games and 10 goals within four years.

In the summer of 1988 Rother joined the league promoted Sachsenring Zwickau. There he was also used as a striker, played 25 point games and was the most successful shooter of his team with five goals. However, he could not prevent the Zwickau from being relegated again after a year. Thereupon Rother separated again from Sachsenring and signed up for the 1989/90 season with the upper division Energie Cottbus. Also as a regular striker, he made 29 first division appearances in two seasons, but was only successful with one goal.

After Cottbus had missed qualification for professional football in 1991, Rother returned to 1. FC Magdeburg, which was also relegated to the amateur league. There he was active in the first team until 1994 and played 68 point games in which he scored 23 goals.

After FCM missed the qualification for the new regional league, Rother and Frank Siersleben followed his former teammate Rolf Döbbelin , who was the coach at SV Fortuna Magdeburg . With Fortuna he made it to the fourth class league. This is where Rother ended his athletic career in 1999. Since then he has been playing in the traditional FCM team. From 2004 to 2006 Rother was once again active for the national league club VfB Ottersleben under coach Döbbelin.
