Reinhard von Dalwigk

Reinhard Ludwig Karl Gustav von Dalwigk (born January 21, 1818 in Kassel , † June 3, 1897 in Wehlheiden near Kassel) was an Oldenburg court marshal and director of the grand ducal court theater in Oldenburg .

Life

Dalwigk was born as the son of the Hesse-Kassel court marshal and landowner Alexander Felix von Dalwigk (born June 26, 1776, † August 16, 1839) and his wife Hedwig nee. Milchling von und zu Schönstadt (* May 29, 1787; † November 8, 1854) was born and grew up on the family estate near Arolsen . He was a member of the Hessian - Waldeckschen primeval noble family Dalwigk , which belonged to the Old Thessian knighthood .

He attended high school in Bielefeld and then studied law at the universities of Heidelberg and Marburg . In 1847 he joined the Oldenburg court service as a chamberlain on the recommendation of the Oldenburg Lord Chamberlain, who was distantly related to him, Alexander von Rennenkampff . The following year he took a leave of absence to participate as a volunteer in the Schleswig-Holstein survey against Denmark . In October 1850 he became chamberlain and cavalier of the Hereditary Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter , whom he accompanied on his educational trip to Italy , Greece and Turkey from 1850-1851 . It was during these months that Dalwigk gained the heir's trust, and after he took office in 1853, he quickly made a career in court service.

As an educated amateur or autodidact, Dalwigk had acquired thorough knowledge in the musical and artistic field through self-study and in 1854 received supervision of the Oldenburg court orchestra, which was primarily committed to the court, but through public concerts an increasingly important role in the musical life of the City played. Since the beginning of the 1860s, Dalwigk campaigned for a reorganization of the Oldenburg theater. In 1854, Grand Duke Peter II had outsourced the theater from the court administration due to constantly increasing subsidies and placed its management in private hands. This solution was not sustainable in the long run, both financially and artistically. At Dalwigk's suggestion, the Grand Duke set up a theater commission as the supreme supervisory and control body in the autumn of 1865, which included Dalwigk and Hofrat Heinrich Georg Köhler, the director of the court management. Both men ran the theater together until 1893, with Dalwigk taking on external representation and the function of artistic director. The new building of the theater, which was inaugurated in 1881, falls during the time of her management. On this occasion, Dalwigk wrote a clearly written chronicle of the theater that was rich in material. In 1873 he was appointed Oberhofmarschall and in 1877 he was awarded the title of Excellence . In addition to these offices, he was a board member of the Oldenburger Kunstverein from 1856 and also its chairman from 1873 to 1893. In 1875 he became a member of the Oldenburg Literary Society . For reasons of age he resigned all offices in 1893 and then lived on his family's estates in Waldeck and Hesse, where he died four years later at the age of 80.

Reinhard von Dalwigk was married to Jenny Charlotte born on October 19, 1851. von Wachholtz (* May 16, 1820 - May 30, 1865), the daughter of Major General Friedrich Ludwig von Wachholtz from Brunswick .
