Reinhold Haberlandt (born July 29, 1936 in Tangermünde ; † December 18, 2019 in Leipzig ) was a German physicist .

Live and act

Reinhold Haberlandt was the son of the businessman Reinhold Haberlandt and his wife Ilse née Fricke. He had three brothers and a sister. After attending the elementary and elementary school Tangermünde from 1942 to 1950, the secondary school "Hinrich Brunsberg" (now secondary school) followed from 1950 to 1954 until the Abitur .

In 1954 he began studying physics at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg , initially as a teacher, but from 1956 onwards with the aim of becoming a physicist. His teachers were here among other things of Mathematics Wolfgang Engel , Herbert Grötzsch and Hans Schubert , Physics Wilhelm Messerschmidt , Günther monk , Gerhard Becherer and Heinz Bethge and physical chemistry Horst Sackmann . He received his diploma in 1959 for the work "Quantitative determination of a residual stress state" from Max Hieke at the Institute for Theoretical Physics.

From 1959 to 1991 he held various positions in the Leipzig institutions of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1965 he was with the thesis "General quantum statistics almost classical systems with applications on inhibited rotators in molecular crystals and the equation of state of real gases" at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Leipzig Günter Vojta doctorate .

From 1967 to 1969 he was Scientific Director of the Laboratory for Statistical Physics. When the Central Institute for Isotope and Radiation Research was founded in 1970 , he took over the management of the “Statistical and Chemical Physics” department. As before, his fields of work were the statistics of irreversible processes, molecular dynamics and computer simulation of many-body systems.

When the institute was restructured in 1980, he became head of the larger area of "Isotope Research", which only contained his previous area as a department. Because of the more numerous administrative tasks, his previous research area has now faded somewhat into the background.

In 1972 Haberlandt became honorary lecturer and in 1979 honorary professor for theoretical physics at the University of Leipzig, after obtaining a doctorate B in 1976 with the thesis “Statistical theory of irreversible processes with applications to chemical reactions” (converted to Dr. habil. In 1991). He supervised the work of numerous diploma and postgraduate students, including the diploma thesis of Angela Kasner, later Chancellor Angela Merkel , in 1977/78 .

After the dissolution of the Institute for Isotope and Radiation Research on December 31, 1990, he continued his work in a WIP working group “Statistical Theory of Non- Equilibrium Processes” before he became Head of Department (Spokesman) MDC (Molecule dynamics and computer simulation) at the Institute for Theoretical in 1994 Physics at the University of Leipzig. After retiring in 2001, he was still involved in various DFG projects of the German Research Foundation .
