Reliquiae is a German medieval rock band from Osnabrück . In the beginning the group described their own style as "Mediaeval World Folk", in the course of the album "Winter" rather as "Mediaeval Dark Rock".

history

The band in 2011 at the Wacken Open Air

The band was founded at the end of 2009 after the medieval band Obscuratis broke up. The three former Obscuratismitglieder Morti Lokison, Filia of Musenberg and Zsolt Dobos founded out with former Mortis - and Feuerschwanz -Sackpfeifer Cordoban and former Schelmish -Schlagwerker Fragor the band Reliquiae.

At the beginning of 2010, their first mini-album Prolog came on the market, which was initially only intended as a demo, but was processed independently for sale due to the great demand. In the same year Cordoban decided to leave the band for personal reasons. Bastus joined the band for him and would take over the main vocals and the stringed instruments.

In 2011 the first big album was released with Audi, Vide, Tace . In addition to traditional pieces from the medieval scene, this CD already contained the first German-language original compositions. Stylistically, Audi, Vide, Tace is a very varied album with vocal pieces in different languages and pure instrumentals.

In 2011 Reliquiae also played for the first time at the Wacken Open Air and various other festivals, concerts and medieval markets all over Germany. Shortly before Christmas 2011, the band launched a remix competition for the song Am Teich . The best remixes sent in appeared in 2012 on the EP Am Teich .

Since their founding, they have played regularly at the Medieval Fantasy Spectaculum , Germany's largest traveling medieval culture festival. In addition to many medieval markets throughout Germany, they played for the first time in May 2012 at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig and had their first appearances in Italy.

At the end of 2012, the band introduced their new Davul player, Comatus der Geistige . In January 2013 Fragor announced his departure from Reliquiae because, for personal reasons, he was no longer 100% behind the band, as stated on the band's Facebook page. In March 2013 it was announced that they could sign another bagpiper with Coluber .

Front singer Bastus 2015

In April 2013 the new album "Pandora" was released, which had already evolved noticeably away from pure medieval to rock music. After the 2013 market season, Filia von Museberg announced her departure from Reliquiae on her Facebook page. She was replaced by Svea Elderthal .

In 2014 the band played for the first time in Switzerland and for the third year in a row in Italy.

In 2015 there followed appearances at several other big festivals, such as the Summer Breeze , the Feuertanz Festival , again the Wave-Gotik-Treffen and others, in which the new electric guitarist Hendrik also took part.

In the same year the band split their program into a purely acoustic and a rock program.

To reflect this change, the new album Winter was created in 2014 and 2015 , which was released in April 2016.

For professional reasons, Hendrik had to leave the band in 2016 and was replaced by "Breacán". In this new formation, work began on the new album, for which the band wanted to take more time and was also looking for a new partner, whom they found with the Cologne label "Metalville". "Babylon", as the CD was christened, was released in August 2019.

style

In 2011 the band's repertoire for the album Audi, Vide, Tace ranged from scene classics such as Douce Dame Jolie , to Russian folk songs such as Katyusha , to covering modern rock songs with the song Seven Nation Army .

The playing style can therefore be described as rocking from the start of the band, although the band completely renounced the use of electric guitars until 2015.

The album Pandora represented a first further development of this style. On it self-composed, German-language pieces dominated for the first time. It is a themed album with a textual focus on excerpts from Greek mythology and their reinterpretation. Thematic aspects are often metaphorical and leave the listener wide scope for their own interpretations.

With the album Winter , released in April 2016, the band consistently continues on the path of their development. Winter is the first album with an electric guitar and a much larger use of orchestral elements and modern technology.

This development is also clearly noticeable in the band's live program, which has been presented acoustically for Mittelalter organizers since 2015, while the band presents a new rock program at festivals and club concerts, with some changes to the line-up of the instruments: "Morti" switched from the bagpipes and flutes to the bass, Bastus only plays cister occasionally in order to be able to concentrate more on singing and performance, Comatus, who next to Davul soon started playing the Indian harmonium , now plays almost exclusively keyboard.

With "Babylon" Reliquiae gets harder and less melancholy than on the previous album. Since then Svea has had another instrument in her luggage and plays nyckelharpa.

Trivia

Filia von Museberg (violin and bagpipes until 2013) is the sister of guitarist Greif , who plays in the Osnabrück dark metal band Nachtblut . In 2015 and 2016 he played the electric guitars in the rock set as Hendrik at Reliquiae.
