The Rem Lift 25000 is a special barge known as a dock ship without its own drive.

Principle of loading a dock ship

description

The barge, built in Japan as Giant 4 , can, similar to a floating dock, lower its hull by flooding ballast tanks so that the loading area sinks under water and floating loads can be picked up or unloaded. Loading and unloading can be done from the side or from the rear. The usable loading area is 4320 m² and can be loaded with 15 t / m². The capacity of the barge is 24,135 dwt. Typical cargoes are oil rigs, wrecked warships and other non-seaworthy ships.

Salvage of the Kursk

Before 2012 the barge was part of Smit International's fleet as Giant 4 . The company in 2001 was instrumental in the salvage of the Kursk , a 2000 decline, Russian nuclear-powered submarine of the Oscar-II class involved. Together with Mammoet , a complex concept had been developed to saw the wreck from its position 100 meters below the surface of the Barents Sea, to lift it and to transport it away with the Giant 4 . For this purpose, the Giant 4 in the shipyard Shipdock Amsterdam was equipped accordingly and a block of flats, a machine area for energy and compressed air supply as well as a store for tools, spare parts and working media (nitrogen, oxygen, etc.) were set up. The hull was reinforced in the necessary places, twenty-six jacks and expansion joints with large drums were installed.
