Rembrandt is a British feature film about the life of the Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn from 1936.
action
The film takes place in 17th century Amsterdam . Rembrandt's wife Saskia dies. She was not only his great love, but also his only model. In his grief he paints Saskia one last time before her picture threatens to disappear forever for him. Shortly after her death, Rembrandt received the commission for his famous painting The Night Watch . But the clients cannot recognize themselves in this picture and are angry. Rembrandt then gets drunk.
Ten years later, Rembrandt is heavily in debt. His belongings have already been sold, but his debts remain overwhelming. Rembrandt meets a beggar who first models a picture of King Saul and then teaches him to beg. But Rembrandt has no talent for begging. Eventually Rembrandt flees from the debt and his new partner Geertje Dircx from Amsterdam to Leyden , where he stays with his father and brother, who run a mill. But the hard work is not for the sensitive artist. He returns, where he meets Hendrickje Stoffels and finally comes to rest after the death of Saskia. She will be his new model and he wants to marry her. In the country, he thinks he can paint in peace and live with Hendrickje. Hendrickje also finds a way to escape debt. She declares all of his paintings to be her property so that the creditors will not get Rembrandt's money as soon as he sells a painting. So they can return to Amsterdam and get married. But the wedding does not take place anymore because Hendrickje dies.
Years later, Rembrandt is an old man who drinks and lives in even greater poverty than when he was younger. He lives on the alms of friends, which he puts in paint to work on his last work, a self-portrait.
background
Rembrandt was to be the beginning of a series of films about famous painters. But Alexander Korda did not shoot another painter's film afterwards, as the artistically demanding film at the box office did not have the success he had hoped for.
Reviews
The Lexicon of International Films wrote: “Dramatic sketches from the life of the Dutch painter. Photographed atmospherically and a historical milieu and character study played by Charles Laughton with ravishing vitality. "
Reclam's film guide stated : “Korda was apparently trying to [...] repeat the great success of his film The Private Life of Henry VIII . This did not quite succeed, probably because he had to do without the ironic distance and the usual actor pomp. But the carefully staged film was nevertheless a prestige success. The attempt to transfer the technique of the painter Rembrandt to the image design of the film is interesting. "
