René Abjean (born November 22, 1937 in Brest ) is a French physicist , composer , choir director and conductor from Brittany . His name is closely linked to the development of Breton choral music.

Life

René Abjean initially received private violin lessons and lessons in music theory. In 1953 he joined the choir in Plouguerneau . At the age of seventeen he founded the men's choir les Korrigans d'Arvor . The need for Breton choral literature soon developed and Abjean began to arrange choral pieces based on traditional Breton songs and melodies. As a source he used, among other things, the Barzaz Breiz . In 1962 he founded the vocal quartet Ar Paganiz and in 1966 joined the student male choir Jeunesse Etudiante Bretonne de Brest . From this the group Breizerien develops. He then co-founded the group An Triskell . He worked regularly with the Quéfféléant brothers. This also led to several recordings, such as War Varc'h d'ar Mor in 1987 and the music for the television series Blanc, Bleu, Rouge by Yannick Andrei. In 1969 he took over the chairmanship of the Festival International des Cornemuses à Brest [International Bagpipe Festival in Brest]. At this time the first meetings of Breton musicians took place. In this context, Abjean met Alan Stivell , Gilles Servat and Tri Yann, among others . Contacts with these musicians as well as with Welsh and Irish influence his work and musical language. In 1975 he led the choir of Ploudalmézeau and in 1977 that of Le Folgoët . By merging these choirs with that of Plouguerneau, he created the Choral du Bout du Monde ensemble. In 1977 he founded the Center Breton d'Art Populaire [Breton Folk Art Center] with Pierre-Yves Moign (1927–2013), which he headed until 1982. Until 1985 he was director of Radio Bretagne Ouest, a Quimper-based, newly established regional radio station of Radio France .
