René Hofman (born March 8, 1961 in Heerlen ) is a Dutch former football player . He was active in the Eredivisie for Roda JC , Feyenoord and Fortuna Sittard and made an international match for the Netherlands .

Club career

Hofman began his career at KEV in his hometown of Heerlen. He made his professional debut in the Eredivisie in the 1979/80 season with Roda JC. The mostly as a right winger used attacker became a committed template donors within the next two years, a regular player. In total, he was active in Kerkrade for ten years , interrupted by three seasons at Feyenoord from 1986 to 1989, where coach Rinus Israël lured him, who absolutely wanted him in his team, but with whom he could not get along. Nevertheless, he scored a total of 33 goals for Feyenoord in three years, 14 of them and eleven assists in his first season. After his return, he played for Roda until 1992 before moving to the Limburg rival in Sittard . He was relegated to Fortune in 1993 and then ended his career there with a season in the Eerste Divisie . In total, he came to 389 missions in the honor division, scoring 97 goals. He played twelve times with Roda and Feyenoord in the UEFA Cup ; his only goal in this competition, on October 1, 1986 in the 84th minute of the second leg of the first round 1986/87 to 2-0 against MSC Pécs , saved the Rotterdam from an extension and the possible early elimination.

National team

Hofman was appointed to the national team by bond coach Kees Rijvers in November 1982 at the age of 21 . In the friendly against France , in which goalkeeper Edward Metgod and Jan Wouters made their debut in Orange , he had to stay on the bench for 90 minutes. To his own amazement, however, he was in the starting line-up six weeks later when the Netherlands faced Malta in the European Championship qualifier on December 19, 1982 . The Maltese had moved their home game to Germany at the Tivoli in Aachen , just a few kilometers from the Dutch border and from Hofman's hometown of Heerlen. The game attracted 17,000 mostly Dutch viewers to Aachen - never before had so many watched a “home game” of the Maltese. Under the direction of the German referee Dieter Pauly , the Netherlands won 6-0. Hofman himself was not satisfied with his appearance; he neither scored nor could he give an assist. Rijvers replaced him and Gerald Vanenburg after 66 minutes when the score was 5-0, with Ruud Gullit and Jurrie Koolhof replacing them . In retrospect, Hofmann found it strange that he didn't get a chance in the national team afterwards. “When I was 30, I played a lot better than when I was still studying,” he said in March 2009. By the way, he didn't change his orange shirt after the game. Like a shirt from the clubs he played for, it is still in his closet at home.

After the active time

After the end of his playing career Hofman coached various low-class amateur clubs. He works as a physical education teacher for people with intellectual disabilities .
