Heinz Kurt Spitzbart (born November 30, 1930 in Leipzig ; † November 2, 2008 in Erfurt ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

Live and act

Heinz Spitzbart was born in the Leipzig University Women's Clinic . He grew up in the Leipzig area, where he also attended elementary school. In 1949 Spitzbart graduated from high school in Leipzig . He then studied medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1949 to 1955 . Heinz Spitzbart completed his compulsory assistantship at the district hospitals of Annaberg-Buchholz and Olbernhau . On April 1, 1955, he received his doctorate . After his license to practice medicine on May 1, 1956, Spitzbart worked for several months at the Leipzig District Hygiene Institute under Georg Wildführ and at the Rostock University Women's Clinic . From August 1957 to September 1958 he was an assistant doctor at the women's clinic at the Medical Academy in Erfurt . He then moved to the University Women's Clinic in Leipzig under Norbert Aresin. There, Heinz Spitzbart first became senior assistant, 1961 senior physician and later senior senior physician. On April 29, 1964 he received his habilitation and was appointed lecturer on July 1, 1964. On September 1, 1971, he was appointed full professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Leipzig. From April 8, 1971, after the death of Norbert Aresin, he temporarily headed the women's clinic until Karl Bilek was appointed as the new director on April 1, 1974. In 1973 Heinz Spitzbart was shortlisted as an applicant for the chair at the Medical Academy in Dresden . In 1974, however, he sat in at the University Women's Clinic in Halle and at the Institute for Microbiology at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena , and finally on February 1, 1976, as a full professor for gynecology and obstetrics at the Women's Clinic of the Medical Academy Erfurt under its then director Fritz Wagner to be called. In 1980, Spitzbart was appointed to the university's scientific council and remained its member after the fall of the Berlin Wall after a secret election in 1990. Spitzbart managed the clinic as part of the university until the Medical University of Erfurt was liquidated in 1993. After that, he continued to run the clinic, which has now been renamed Klinikum Erfurt GmbH, until his retirement on March 31, 1996. His successor was Udo Hoyme, under whom he continued to hold infectious consultations. He was also scientifically active with Ernst-Reiner Weissenbacher in Munich . Heinz Spitzbart died in 2008 shortly before the age of 78.

Appreciation

The main scientific work of Spitzbart was in the field of biology and pathology of the vagina , especially fungal infections and viral diseases. He was considered the most important expert on gynecological infections in the GDR .

Honors

In 1985, Professor Spitzbart was honored with the title of Medical Councilor. The European Society for Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology has been awarding the Heinz Spitzbart Prize since 1996 for outstanding work in the field of therapy-relevant, infectious and immunological research.
