Renée Schroeder (born May 18, 1953 in João Monlevade , Brazil ) is an Austrian researcher and university professor at the Institute for Biochemistry at Max F. Perutz Laboratories , a joint venture between the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna .

Life

Renée Schroeder, born in Brazil, returned to Austria with his family in 1967 during the military dictatorship . Her father worked in the steel industry and got a job at Felten & Guilleaume in Bruck an der Mur (today VA Wire Austria GmbH ). There they also made the Matura .

Her research is in the field of biochemistry , especially ribonucleic acid . She was one from June 2001 to November 2005 of the Austrian Federal Government launched Bioethics at -Commission. From 2005 to 2010 she was Vice President of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research and has been a member of the Council for Research and Technology Development since September 2010 .

The mother of two sons has repeatedly expressed herself critical of Austrian education and research policy. Above all, she criticizes the discrimination against women within university structures, which is why she is particularly committed to promoting women in science. This long-term commitment earned her in 2001 the special honor award "For Women in Science" donated by UNESCO and L'Oréal , and in 2007 she received the Vienna Women's Prize. Renée Schroeder also spoke frequently about church and religion and their view of women and the world.

In 2003 Renée Schroeder became the second woman to become a real member of the mathematics and natural sciences class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In May 2012, Renée Schroeder announced her resignation from the Academy in protest against the lack of excellence funding and the high percentage of Cartell Association members in the Academy.

On July 25, 2017 it was announced that Schroeder would stand for the National Council election 2017 on the list of Peter Pilz , for whose election campaign she donated 20,000 euros.

Renée Schroeder is a member and chairwoman of the Peter Pilz List Party Academy .
