Renate Lenz-Fuchs (born April 19, 1910 in Diez ; † June 23, 2001 there ) was a German lawyer and mayor of Diez. She was married to the journalist and writer Walter Lenz (1911–1963).

Live and act

Lenz-Fuchs was one of the first women to study law in Berlin , Königsberg and Bonn . Here she passed the first state examination in 1933 and the second state examination in 1936. Since women were forbidden from legal activities in the Third Reich , she first worked in her father's trading company. After the end of the Second World War , she started working as a lawyer at military courts. At the end of 1945, the French occupation initially refused to work as a notary , stating that women could not be entrusted with assets, but finally agreed to the appeal.

In 1958, with the introduction of the "only notary", she gave up her practice as a lawyer and worked as a notary in Diez until 1983. During this time she was a member of the board of directors from 1969 to 1984 and vice-president of the Koblenz Chamber of Notaries between 1969 and 1977 . In 1970 she was awarded the title of Counselor . From 1962 to 1972 she was a member of the permanent deputation of the German Lawyers' Association , whose secretary she took over several times. For a period of ten years she was three times chairwoman of the German Association of Women Lawyers and a founding member and board member of the Franco-German Association of Lawyers. She was also a founding member of the International Federation of Woman Lawyers (FIDA) for many years .

During her work as a notary, she campaigned for equality between men and women, the revision of divorce, guardianship and child rights as well as the reorganization of abortion .

Renate Lenz-Fuchs was Mayor of Diezer from December 15, 1983 to December 4, 1985.

Awards

The French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing awarded Lenz-Fuchs the Ordre national du Mérite for her efforts to promote Franco-German relations. On January 27, 1986 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

After her death, the city of Diez commemorated Renate Lenz-Fuchs in 2005 with a memorial stone.

Artistic engagement

Renate Lenz-Fuchs sponsored concerts and visual artists; together with Renate Felden and Georg Kolletzki (1924–2014) she founded the “Malkreis Haus Eberhard”. She herself painted and exhibited several times.
