Renate Treutel

Renate Treutel (born August 21, 1962 in Leverkusen ) is a German local politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). The social worker has been city councilor since May 2014 and mayor of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital Kiel since November 2018 .

Life

Growing up in Nordenham , Treutel studied social pedagogy at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences from 1982 after training to become a kindergarten teacher . From 1986 she then worked in various positions in the social administration of the city of Kiel. Because she often came into contact with Turkish families, she learned Turkish and traveled to Turkey to improve her language skills. Unlike initially planned, she stayed there for four years, during which she worked as a tutor and German teacher. After her return, she continued to work for the city, initially as the head of the Elmschenhagen social center , later as the head of the child and youth welfare services and as the deputy head of the Office for Family and Social Affairs and finally as the head of the Office for Schools, Children and Youth Facilities.

In April 2014 Treutel was as a non-party to the proposal of the then alliance of SPD , Greens and SSW from the council elected Councilor for Education, Youth and creative city of Kiel. She took office in May. Since September 2018, culture has also been part of the area of ​​responsibility of the department she heads , making it the largest in the city with around 2000 employees. After she had meanwhile joined the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party , Treutel was elected mayor for her current term of office as city councilor and thus the first deputy of the mayor Ulf Kämpfer in November 2018 with the support of the cooperation between the SPD, the Greens and the FDP . She follows Peter Todeskino , who retired in May 2017 and is also a member of the Greens. In January 2020, she was re-elected as city councilor with a red-green-yellow majority for a second six-year term beginning in May of that year, for which she was confirmed as mayor in March.

Treutel lives with her husband in Preetz .
