Renate von Mangoldt (born December 15, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German photographer who primarily specializes in portraits of writers.

Life

Renate von Mangoldt grew up in Erlangen and, encouraged by the Erlangen sculptor and photographer Helmut Lederer , who was her role model, attended the Bavarian State School for Photography in Munich after graduating from high school . Initially her artistic interest was stones, dolmens and menhirs as well as black and white structures (e.g. hop sticks in the snow in the Holledau ).

When she met the writer Walter Höllerer in 1963 , she followed him to his newly founded Literarisches Colloquium (LCB) in Berlin. There she built up the LCB photo archive, which she looks after to this day. The literary scholar Hans-Joachim Neubauer wrote about her: “ Few photographers have shaped the image - and thus the memory - of recent German literature since the 1960s as Renate von Mangoldt. She is one of the great chroniclers of her generation (...) Anyone who thinks of authors like Ingeborg Bachmann , Paul Celan , Uwe Johnson , Heiner Müller or Günter Grass has her pictures in mind. "

Renate von Mangoldt was married to Walter Höllerer from 1965 until his death in 2003, the couple has two sons.
