Location of Rendbjerg in the middle of the Gendarme Path (red line) and on the north bank of the Flensburg Fjord |
Rendbjerg ( German : Rennberg ) is a settlement ( Danish : bebyggelse ) on the Flensburg Fjord , which belongs to the Danish town of Egernsund . Since the administrative reform on January 1, 2007 , the place has been part of the large municipality of Sønderborg in the Syddanmark region , before that it was part of the Broager municipality .
Description and location
Rendbjerg mainly consists of summer houses. The area owned by the Rendbjerg Landowners Association comprises 176 summer houses and is divided into two sections: Teglbakken in the west and Bredmaj in the east. In addition to the built-up area, there is a communal area consisting of meadows, hills, forest and beach. In the southwest, the settlement borders on Marina Minde , a yacht harbor with 460 berths and rental of trolling , motor and charter boats , the name of which is derived from the formerly located brickworks Minde Teglværk . Another smaller port in the south has space for around 50 dinghies and small boats.
The Gendarmstien runs through the village , a former control route on which Danish gendarmes patrolled the German-Danish border from 1920 to 1958.
Brickworks
The place is located in an area where clay excavations were carried out earlier for the brickworks in Rendbjerg and its offshoots in Egeskov, which has shaped the landscape around the settlement. The bricks were shipped to a bridge where the landowners association has its bathing bridge today. Large quantities of unused old bricks on the beach and brick-walled villas still bear witness to the industrial past. Not far from the village near Iller , the Cathrinesminde brickwork museum shows the history of the brickworks and its products.
In 1783, the Rendbjerg Teglværk ("Rennberger Brickworks") began producing bricks. The company developed into Northern Europe's largest brick factory. In its prime, up to 100 workers were employed. In 1851 alone, 2 million bricks were burned in five chamber kilns. Other stones such as clinker bricks , roof stones, tiles, gravestones or cornice stones were also produced here and sold for buildings from Hamburg to Copenhagen. The products were awarded prizes at the world exhibitions in Paris in 1855 and in London in 1862 . After changing hands several times, the Rendbjerg Teglværk was demolished in 1928.
Rendbjerg slot
The large villa, known as Rendbjerg Slot ("Rennberger Castle") by the local population , was built in 1872 by the director and co-owner of the Rendbjerg teglværk , Hans Heinrich Dithmer jun., And its elaborate architectural style was intended to illustrate the diverse products of the brickworks to the viewer. From 1952 to 1976 the house was a home and school for young people with behavioral disorders from Esbjerg, and since 1976 it has housed a rest home for “developmentally disabled” adults and children.
