Renton is a small town in the Scottish council area of West Dunbartonshire . It borders directly to the south on Alexandria and is about three kilometers north of Dumbarton on the west bank of the Leven .
history
Renton is a relatively young community. The first textile factory settled in the area as early as 1715, but the actual town was not built as a planned settlement from 1782 onwards. The driving force was the Smollett family (compare Tobias Smollett ) who lived in the area. The place was named after Smollett's daughter-in-law, a née Renton of Lammerton . The city developed with the textile industry until its decline. In 2011, 2,207 people lived in Renton.
traffic
The A82 , which connects Glasgow to Inverness via Fort William , touches Renton in the west and connects the city to the trunk road network. In the middle of the 19th century Renton got its own station, which was served on the Caledonian and Dunbartonshire Junction Railway of the North British Railway between Bowling and Balloch . Today the trains of the North Clyde Line stop there , some of which go via Glasgow to Edinburgh . The nearest airport is Glasgow Airport, around 15 km away .
Attractions
At Renton there are three monuments from the highest Scottish monument category A. The Smollett Monument , dating from 1774, is located on the site of the local elementary school. It was built in memory of the writer Tobias Smollett. The neo-Gothic Millburn Church is now only preserved as a ruin. For a long time it was assumed that it was built according to a design by the architect John Thomas Rochead . Today the church building is more likely to be attributed to George Meikle Kemp . In the mid-19th century, James Aitken , owner of the Rosebank whiskey distillery in Camelon , built the Dalmoak House country villa, southwest of Renton.
Twelve other monuments in Renton are sorted into categories B and C. See also List of Listed Buildings in Renton .
