The Republic of West Papua is an unrecognized state in the western part of the island of New Guinea that was unilaterally founded by the Papuan people in July 1971 . It includes the provinces of Papua and Papua Barat , which is also called West Papua, and is not recognized by Indonesia or other countries.
The two organizations West Papua Liberation Organization (WPLO) and West Papua National Liberation Army (WPLNA) see themselves responsible for enforcing independence, some of which use violent means in the fight against institutions of the Indonesian state.
As early as 1949, the region had achieved political independence after the final end of Dutch rule in Southeast Asia. However, this quickly ended with complete annexation in the Indonesian state. In 1963 another attempt to establish an independent state after a two-year military conflict failed.
The aspirations for independence are (as of September 2018) intensely supported by Vanuatu , which also called on the United Nations to support these efforts.
When a petition to enforce an independence referendum was held in early 2019, 1.8 of the area's 2.5 million residents voted for a referendum.
