life and career

Early years

René Pérez Joglar was born in Hato Rey, a municipality in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan, as the son of a lawyer and the actress Flor Joglar de Gracia . He first grew up in Trujillo Alto, in the southeast of San Juan, with seven siblings in a lower middle class household. In his childhood he played drums, alto saxophone and guitar. He learned to make music largely autodidactically. His mother also influenced his musical enthusiasm. An attention deficit made it difficult for him to learn things in school, which is why his mother often sang to him what he had to learn. At times, his mother was married to Cabra Martínez father, through which the later rap duo met. Although their parents separated early on, the two stepbrothers maintained a close relationship and were in regular contact.

Pérez Joglar describes Puerto Rico as "a bit brutal" in his childhood , as around half of his friends at the time were murdered or were in prison.

During his time in high school , Pérez Joglar was a drummer in a school band and his youth were marked by great literary interest.

He studied at the School of Fine Arts (Escuela de Artes Plásticas) in Puerto Rico and later earned a master's degree in animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia . During his time in his master's degree, he began rapping and writing poetry, also to better deal with stress. After completing his master's degree, Pérez Joglar moved to Barcelona to study and make films before returning to Puerto Rico. For a while he made a living doing illustrations, but became increasingly bored. As reggaeton gained attention in Puerto Rico, it eventually found its way into the music business by editing and directing videos .

Calle 13

The rap duo started recording music in 2004. Pérez Joglar contributed the lyrics and the rap, his stepbrother Cabra Martínez the musical elements. At the end of 2005 the two released their first album, Calle 13 , with which they celebrated great success. The duo initially became successful with more sexual and scandalous music. Over time, however, the lyrics became more critical and they increasingly conveyed social and political messages through their music. The stepbrothers became one of the most popular and influential music groups on the Latin American music scene. They celebrated numerous successes in the following years and received a total of 22 Latin Grammy Awards. The duo's last album so far, MultiViral , was released in 2014. After the album's world tour, the duo interrupted their work together.

The band title and the respective artist names of Pérez Joglar and Cabra Martínez go back to their youth. When Pérez Joglar lived in a gated community on 13th Street (Spanish: Calle 13 ) in San Juan, Cabra Martínez introduced himself to the porter as a visitor (Spanish: visitante ) of a resident (Spanish: resident ).

Solo career

In 2017 Pérez Joglar released his first solo album Residente . Pérez Joglar read his DNA analyzed for the album with the aim of finding out more about his origins . He then traveled to all the countries to which he was genetically related and worked with local musicians. Pérez Joglar also made a documentary about his trip and had an interactive website created. He visited Russia , Georgia , China and Ghana , among others . In his music he processed historical events from the regions he visited.

His first solo album also turned out to be very successful. The album won a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music and received three nominations at the 2018 Grammys .

For his previously unreleased second solo album, Pérez Joglar worked with scientists from Yale University and New York University. For this purpose, brain patterns of mice, worms and monkeys were analyzed.

Private life

From 2006 to 2009 Pérez Joglar was in a relationship with Denise Quiñones , a former Miss Universe .

In a private ceremony in El Yunque National Forest , Pérez Joglar married Argentine actress Soledad Fandiño in January 2013 . In August 2014, the couple's son Milo was born.

In February 2020 he published the song René in which he addressed formative experiences from his childhood and his own mental health. Accordingly, he has been struggling with depressive moments and sleep problems for ten years.

Musical style

Pérez Joglar's texts are sometimes described as vulgar, but also as remarkably intellectual, colorful and funny. The Panamanian salsa musician Rubén Blades had the greatest influence on his music . Other musical influences that should be emphasized are the rock composer Charly García and the folk singer Mercedes Sosa .
