The Retschenbach is an approximately 6 km long right tributary of the Effelder in the Thuringian Slate Mountains .

course

The Retschenbach rises in about 650  m above sea level. NN on the southern slope of the 829 meter high Buhler mountain . It flows about 1 km long above ground, but then disappears in the Zinselhöhle , a small cave in the shell limestone of the Thuringian Slate Mountains . That is why it is also called Lochbach in its upper course until it disappears in the stream shrinkage known as the "swallow holes". The Zinselhöhle was washed out by the waters of the Retschenbach over thousands of years .

About 250 meters south of the Zinselhöhle the creek emerges again into daylight, in the summer half of the year this part of the creek bed dries out again and again. The river then crosses the 3 km long Retschenbachgrund, a meadow surrounded by mountain slopes. In the course of drainage measures, the species-rich and idyllic Retschenbachgrund was severely ecologically damaged by straightening and partially lowering the river bed.

In the further course the Retschenbach crosses under the Eisfeld – Sonneberg railway line . There the Mühlgraben branches off directly to the Seltendorfer Obermühle, which in turn feeds a biologically very valuable small pond. The Retschenbach then traverses the local situation Seltendorf in north-south direction, runs directly on Rare Strand sports field along to shortly afterwards at the Bätzenmühle at the southern end of Seltendorf in the Effelder lead to. The Effelder turn opens in Froschgrundsee , a man-made flood protection - Reservoir , in the Itz , a tributary of the River Main .
