Reza Deghati

Reza Deghati (* 1952 in Tabriz , Iran ) is a French-Iranian photojournalist . He works under the name Reza ( Persian رضا).

Career

Deghati was born in Tabriz , Iran and studied architecture at the University of Tehran . He began his career with the photographic documentation of the political development of Iran. Due to his critical stance, he spent several years in prison and went into exile in 1981. Deghati is now a French citizen and lives in Paris.

Reza is recognized worldwide as a highly respected photojournalist and has published articles in many prestigious international magazines ( Newsweek , Time Magazine , National Geographic Magazine , GEO ). During his work, he traveled to several countries and published articles on the Bosporus , the Great Wall of China , Lebanon , Afghanistan , Rwanda , Sarajevo , the Central Asian steppes and the Empty Quarter in Arabia. He always focuses on the situation of the local population and documents social grievances.

In addition to his work as a photojournalist, he gives lectures and workshops at universities, for example in Stanford , Washington , Southern California, at the Sorbonne in Paris , in Beijing and in Istanbul .

He gives lectures, among others at UNESCO and the National Geographic Society .

In 1991 Reza and his brother founded the Webistan Photo Agency , which not only represents Reza but also other photographers.

In 1990/91 Reza worked as an advisor to the United Nations in Afghanistan in the context of humanitarian aid for the war-torn country. The impressions gained in this way led to the founding of AINA in 2001, an organization with the objective of "growth of civilization through actions in the field of education (especially for children and women), information and communication" (»[AINA] contributes to the emergence of civil society through actions in the area of ​​education (particularly focusing on women and children), information and communication. «).

Awards (selection)

In 1983 and 1986 Reza took second place in the selection of the "World Press Photo".

In 1996 he received the UNICEF Hope Prize for his work in Rwandan refugee camps.

In November 2005 Reza received the title of “Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite”, the French award for special merits, from the French President Jacques Chirac .

Since May 2009 he has been an honorary doctor of the American University of Paris (AUP) .
