Rheinische Naturforschende Gesellschaft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rheinische Naturforschende Gesellschaft e. V. (RNG) was founded in Mainz in 1834 at the suggestion of the notary and ornithologist Carl Bruch . The original goal of the society was to create and display natural history collections as well as natural history lectures and excursions. The Society's collections were taken over by the City of Mainz at the beginning of the 20th century and formed the basis of the inventory of the Natural History Museum in Mainz, which was founded in 1910 .

founding

The Rheinische Naturforschende Gesellschaft was founded in 1834. The authorities in Darmstadt , Mainz, had belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hesse since 1816 , only approved the founding of the society at the second attempt, as the emphasis on belonging to the Rhineland was feared for political intentions. In addition to naturalists, physicians such as Johann Gröser were also involved to a considerable extent when it was founded. By 1849 they formed their own “Medical Section” within the society.

Society today

The classic goals of company formation are still pursued today. As before, the company is committed to imparting scientific knowledge, especially geosciences and life sciences. Lectures for the interested population take place in the natural history museum of the city of Mainz in the winter half-year. Smaller excursions lead to the surrounding area such as Rheinhessen, Taunus, Hunsrück, Eifel. There is currently an annual excursion lasting several days, which led to Alsace in 2018 and to Thuringia ( Hainich and Kyffhäuser ) in 2019 , and in 2003 the Rhineland-Palatinate partner country Rwanda was visited.

The Rheinische Naturforschende Gesellschaft currently has two active working groups, the Geosciences working group (geology, palaeontology) and the Botany working group . Both working groups organize specialist lectures and excursions under scientific guidance. Another focus is on land maintenance work in Mainz and Rheinhessen . In cooperation with the Upper and Lower Nature Conservation Authority and with local care organizations ( GNOR , NSGI, AKU-Mombach, etc.), areas that are important in terms of nature conservation, mostly botanical, such as the nature reserves Mainzer Große Sand and the "Rabenkopf" in the NSG slope areas around Heidesheimer Weg ( Ingelheim).

In connection with the Natural History Museum Mainz (nhm) and the State Collection for Natural History Rhineland-Palatinate, the RNG publishes regular releases and the Mainz Natural Science Archive. For special services to the Rheinische Naturforschende Gesellschaft and the Naturhistorisches Museum Mainz and for outstanding scientific work in the field of work of the society, the society awards the "Wilhelm von Reichenau Medal" to the first director of the Naturhistorisches Museum and member of the society, Wilhelm von Reichenau , remind.
