The Rhododendron State Park is west of Fitzwilliam in Cheshire County of the US state New Hampshire . The 11 km² state park is named after the 6.5 hectare natural occurrence of Rhododendron maximum .
The site has been registered as a National Natural Landmark since 1982 . The 200-year-old Old Patch Place homestead, which is also located there, was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The building and its former occupants play a central role in the development of the park. The farmhouse was built between 1790 and 1816 by Samuel Patch, whose family used it until 1841. After several changes of ownership, Stephen Follansbee purchased the property in 1885 to use the rhododendron site commercially with the sale of plants, twigs and specially bottled water. In 1901, the new owner Levi Fuller had plans to clear the property . Mary Lee Ware stepped in and acquired the property and transferred it to the Appalachian Mountain Club on the condition that the forest and rododenron population be preserved for the public forever. Likewise, no bushes should be removed and no ax should be used. With one exception during the clean-up work after the damage caused by a hurricane in 1938, these requirements were met. In 1947 ownership was transferred to the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation and a state park was established.
A historic herb garden (Colonial Herb Garden) was created at the Old Patch Place, in which medicinal plants and culinary herbs and spices are planted. In this botanical garden the plants and their effective parts are explained and marked as such. There are growing among other angelica , Stachys , cumin, comfrey , pennyroyal , Elecampane , Rautengewächse, thyme, pennyroyal , wormwood , lavender, sage, tarragon, rosemary, lady's mantle , coltsfoot , bee balm , hops, tansy , Canadian bloodroot , Spearmint , Feverfew , mountain savory , hyssop , lovage, chives, oregano, valerian, vinegar rose , asters and thimbles .
The opening times of the park are limited; it is open from mid-May to November from sunrise to sunset. Several circular hiking trails , a wildflower trail and a section of the 180 km long Metacomet-Monadnock hiking trail lead through the park .
