Location of Riadi in Niger

Riadi is a village in the rural municipality of Safo in Niger .

The riadi, run by a traditional local chief ( chef traditionnel ), belongs, like Soumarana, to a chain in the southern suburbs of the city of Maradi . After about 800 meters to the northeast, along a country road, you reach the national road 9 , which leads to the city center of Maradi. The capital Safo of the rural community of the same name is located just under three kilometers southwest of Riadi. In between runs the river bed of the periodically water-bearing Goulbin Maradi . The rural municipality of Safo is part of the Madarounfa department in the Maradi region .

In the 18th century, farmers from the state of Katsina , who were looking for usable land, settled in the valley of the Goulbin Maradi . To strengthen control of the area, Katsina appointed a governor for the region, whose first seat was the village of Riadi. It was only after the city of Maradi was founded at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries that the seat of power moved there. In 2008 the neighboring community of Djiratawa first made territorial claims on the village of Riadi. The border conflict between the municipalities of Safo and Djiratawa intensified in the years that followed when the mayor of Djiratawa approved a construction project in Riadi that had previously been rejected by the mayor of Safo.

At the 2012 census, Riadi had 5,481 inhabitants who lived in 741 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 3,989 in 594 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 2,589 in 375 households.
