content
Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel is a report on two individual fates and at the same time tells of the loss of utopias and the struggle of ideologies in Cuba . Miriam Martínez, like many of her compatriots, would like to emigrate to the USA. As the daughter of the Cuban revolutionary Ricardo Martínez, this is particularly difficult for her. Ricardo had given up his position as a radio journalist in the 1950s to join Fidel Castro 's rebels . Under the leadership of Che Guevara he founded the pirate radio station Radio Rebelde . This radio became an important information tool of the Cuban Revolution. The documentary Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel shows historical recordings from the time of Radio Rebelde and links the content to the present, to the time of Miriam, who gets information from Radio and TV Martí . Radio Martí broadcasts to Cuba as an arm of Voice of America . The film thus also deals with a piece of media history. According to the International Broadcasting Bureau, Radio Martí is the most successful radio station in world history, as the station achieved audience participation of over 80 percent just months after it was launched in 1985. The head of radio and TV Martí, the historian Rolando E. Bonachea, also speaks in the film. Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel shows the ambivalence of the feelings of father and daughter. Reality has turned the once committed fighter for the revolution into a disillusioned pensioner. At the end of the film, the daughter may have arrived in the land of her dreams, but she doesn't seem so happy. The farewell of the two was a farewell forever, because the daughter will not be able to return to Cuba.
Reviews
"The human representation of a political conflict makes Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel a masterful film that shows how much both sides belong to one and the same coin."
“In his search for objectivity, Frei shows contradictions and paradoxes and avoids taking sides for one side or the other. (...) Frei does all of this with great care for the story-telling and the aesthetics (from the quality of the photography to the economical use of music), which underline the global claim of the film. "
"With the impressive example of a father-daughter relationship, the incurable disruption of today's Cuba can be felt."
"The farewell is a focal point of a film that is rich in information as well as emotionally gripping moments, which confidently combines the individual story with highlights on a piece of Cuban-American media history."
