Richard A. Roth

Richard A. Roth (born September 16, 1940 in Beverly Hills , Los Angeles , California - March 17, 2017 in New York City ) was an American film producer .

Life

Richard A. Roth studied law at the University of California and Berkeley and at the University of Vienna . He graduated from Stanford Law School . He then worked at a small literary agency, where he discovered the script for Summer '42 . He borrowed $ 5,000 from his father and bought the script. He then convinced Robert Mulligan to work as a director. The film, which was finally sold by Warner Bros. for the comparatively small sum of one million dollars, finally sold 32 times the box office and won an Oscar .

He then produced the drama Winter Our Love , which was released shortly after the Roe v. Wade appeared and addressed the issue of abortion . In 1975 Sherlock Holmes' clever brother followed .

In 1981 Roth produced Outland - Planet of the Damned and in 1986 Manhunter - Red Dragon, the first film adaptation of Thomas Harris ' novel Red Dragon . His last films were Back from Hell (1989) and Havana .

Roth also appeared as an actor, but only played minor roles in, among others, Frankenstein Junior , The Greatest Lover of the World and Johnny G. - Gangster Reluctantly .

Roth died of natural causes on March 17, 2017 at the age of 76.

He is often credited with producing the Oscar-nominated film Julia . He is not identical to the film producer of the same name, who was born in 1939.
