Richard Adolf Jaenicke (also: Jänicke , born December 25, 1858 in Chemnitz ; † October 22, 1917 in Dresden ) was a German designer and co-founder of the Chemnitz Wanderer-Werke .

Life

After attending primary school , the son of a master bagger worked for a few years as a tool fitter in the Chemnitz Union machine tool factory and then went on a journey of several years through various machine factories in Germany and the USA . In 1884 he returned to Saxony and met Johann Baptist Winklhofer in Zwickau , who was there as a representative of a sewing machine and bicycle dealer in Munich. Both shared their enthusiasm for the emerging means of transport, the bicycle , and so Jaenicke won Winklhofer for his plan to open a joint workshop in Chemnitz under the name Winklhofer & Jänicke .

In addition to trading in English products, the two soon began to manufacture their own bikes, the development of which was largely in Jaenicke's hands, while Winklhofer was primarily responsible for accounting, advertising and sales.

The company, founded in 1885, expanded rapidly and had to be relocated several times to new, larger buildings, most recently to an area of almost 20,000 square meters in the Chemnitz suburb of Schönau . In 1896 the company was converted into a stock corporation with the support of Dresdner Bank . A year later, Jaenicke retired from the board of directors, but remained a member of the supervisory board until his death . During this time, too, he played a key role in the company's further growth: in 1898, the series production of machine tools began on the basis of the milling machines he had developed .
