Richard Beilharz (born October 30, 1932 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania , † March 25, 1997 in Heidelberg ) was a German Romanist and concert singer as well as a university lecturer. The focus of his academic work was on French literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. As a singer (baritone) he dedicated himself to the art song. Beilharz has also made a name for himself in German-French relations , which is why he was elevated to the rank of knight in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 1989 .

biography

Beilharz was the son of the senior engineer Ernst Beilharz from Baiersbronn and his wife Emma, ​​nee. Swiss. He was married to Anna Beilharz (* 1932), b. Force. The marriage resulted in three daughters, including the translator Alexandra Beilharz and the actress Corinna Beilharz . He is the brother of the artistic director and theater director Manfred Beilharz .

After graduating from the Goldberg-Gymnasium in Sindelfingen, he studied Romance studies, English and comparative literature at the University of Tübingen . 1954/55 he was Assistant de Langue allemande at the Ecole Nationale Professionnelle La Martinière in Lyon; 1956/57 Assistant Teacher at the Emanuel School and Westminster City School in London, 1959 scholarship holder at the Center Européen at the University of Nancy . In 1961 the doctorate under Kurt Wais on the aftermath of German irrationalists under Charles Baudelaire through the mediation of Catherine Crowe . 1961–1964 Beilharz was assistant at the chair for Romance studies and comparative literature with Kurt Wais in Tübingen. The state examination took place in 1964, and from 1964–65 he was a student trainee in Stuttgart with an assessor examination. From 1965 to 1966 he was a scientist. Assistant to Erich Weis at the Ludwigsburg University of Education.

From 1966, Beilharz represented the subject of French language and literature and its didactics at the Heidelberg University of Education , initially as a lecturer and since 1970 as a full professor. He was also a lecturer at the Romance Department of the University of Mannheim (1969–1972) and since 1969 at the University of Heidelberg. Since 1970 he has been the elected spokesman for all French teachers in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg at universities of education ("Landesfachschaftsvorsitzender").

In addition to literary research on Honoré de Balzac and other French authors of the 19th and 20th centuries, Beilharz devoted himself to teaching the French language and culture at elementary and secondary schools in Baden-Württemberg. He organized numerous exchanges for the students, in particular at the École Normale in Châlons-sur-Marne and in the Heidelberg twin city of Montpellier . To this end, he worked closely with Kurt Brenner , who was then head of the Heidelberg House in Montpellier, and with the Franco-German Youth Office . In 1989 he received the French award of a Chevalier dans l ' Ordre des Palmes Académiques for his cultural commitment and his services to German-French friendship .

Parallel to his studies, Beilharz was trained as a concert singer (baritone) with Hermann Achenbach (1899–1982) in Tübingen, and later with Edoardo Assali (Heidelberg). He dealt intensively with the art song . He gave recitals at home and abroad, made radio, television and CD and record recordings. He was accompanied on the piano a. a. by Claude-Erik Nandrup and Adelheid Lechler. A close musical friendship connected him with the pianist and composer Hermann Schäfer, in whose setting of Guillaume Apollinaire's bestiary he can be heard as a baritone.
