Richard Eggs (born October 22, 1621 in Rheinfelden , † August 1, 1659 in Munich ) was a Jesuit priest , professor of rhetoric and author of baroque Jesuit school plays .

Life

The Catholic , who grew up in Rheinfelden in Upper Austria and probably witnessed the armed conflicts in and around his hometown during the Thirty Years' War (for example the Battle of Rheinfelden in 1638, in which the Protestants won the day), moved to the Catholic area in 1641, from Elector Maximilian I. ruled Bavaria and joined the Jesuit order in Landsberg am Lech , the pioneer and main bearer of the Counter-Reformation . The Jesuit school theater played a very important role in this movement. The Landsberg Jesuit College (grammar school) had also taken over the existing municipal grammar school in 1640 and set up a rhetoric class there in 1642.

In 1654 Eggs was ordained a priest in Eichstätt . From that year on he was professor of rhetoric , first until 1656 at the Jesuit College Ingolstadt (administrative seat of the Upper German province of the order; the offspring from this province studied here), then until 1657 in Augsburg , then until 1659 in Altötting and finally until his Death in the same year from a hemorrhage , for a short time in Munich .

Egg, who had learned his poetry from the Jesuit rhetorician Jacob Balde , wrote about 50 plays for the stages of the Jesuit schools . He is one of the most important authors of the Baroque Jesuit theater from the area of ​​today's Switzerland .
