Richard Flatter

Richard Flatter (born April 14, 1891 in Vienna ; died there on November 5, 1960 ) was an Austrian Shakespeare translator and researcher, poet and playwright.

Life

After studying law in Vienna and obtaining his doctorate, Flatter worked as a lawyer for several years before turning to the theater. After training in the directing class with Max Reinhardt , he worked as a director in Prague and Breslau , then as a freelance writer, theater poet and translator in Vienna. A first work on Shakespeare appeared in 1933.

In 1938 he had to flee from National Socialism and emigrated to England, where he was imprisoned as an enemy alien in 1939 and brought to Australia. In 1941 he was able to return to England, went to the USA in 1948 and finally returned to Vienna in 1953, where he lived until his death.

His life's work was the translation of the works of Shakespeare, of which he translated almost all the plays and the sonnets . His translations were based on numerous stage performances - including at the Burgtheater - and Flatter himself adapted them for Bavarian Radio .

Flatter was co-editor of the yearbook of the Shakespeare Society and the chronicle of the Vienna Goethe Society .

Flatter was buried in the urn grove of the Vienna Central Cemetery .
